My Sewing Machine Review: Singer Heavy Duty 4423

Singer 4423 Review

My Sewing machine all started…

Earlier this year, my beloved Singer sewing machine that was passed down to me by my mother broke. This sewing machine was given to me as a gift when I was in high school. My mother saw that I was into fashion and loved sewing. To support my dreams of becoming a fashion designer, she decided to give me her one and only sewing machine

dreams and sewing

That sewing machine and I went through many years and projects together. From high school, college, and more. Eventually, parts started to wear down and finally, it broke. When the Singer sewing machine broke down, I pulled out my back up sewing machine out to use. While it was able to keep up, it was not something that could handle being used every day.

Taking Notes

Much to my surprise, my husband was paying attention to me sew. He saw all the struggles that I had. To help me, he started to look into repairing my old Singer sewing machine. What could be done? Would upgrading parts that were needed to be repaired within the sewing machine be beneficial?

After much assessment with all the cost that it would have taken, he decided it was better to just buy an updated and upgraded version of the Singer sewing machine. For my birthday, he surprised me with this beautiful this heavy-duty Singer sewing machine. He always knows how to read my heart and support me in achieving my dreams. Without me even having to say a word.

That is the story of how I came to own this Singer sewing machine. Below is my honest review of this Singer 4423 heavy-duty sewing machine

accessories for sewing machine

What’s Included In My Sewing Machine

Besides the machine, there were many accessories included. It comes with a machine manual that shows you how to set up the machine; how many types of stitches your sewing machine can do along with other various things.

The accessories include:

  • All-Purpose Foot
  • Zipper Foot
  • Buttonhole Foot
  • Button Sewing Foot
  • Seam Ripper / Lint Brush
  • Quilting Guide
  • Needles, Bobbins
  • Screwdriver
  • Auxiliary Spool Pin
  • Spool Pin Felt
  • Soft-Sided Dust Cover

To ensure that your sewing journey is a successful one, the manufacturer included all these accessories. This was great in my opinion. Since my previous sewing machine was passed down, I didn’t have many of the accessories. Therefore, I was happy to see that this one came with some.

Ease of Use

Like many other home machines, this heavy-duty sewing machine runs smoothly. I can do any of the necessary things on this machine. Such as running different base stitches, and some are actually long base stitches.

My older machine also had “base” Stitch. The longest was size 6 stitch length but it wasn’t truly size 6. The stitches on that machine ran smaller, so it was refreshing to have a new sewing machine that was true to size in stitch lengths.

Since my machine was still new, I didn’t run into any issues. The preset sewing tensions were good. Thus, I didn’t have to change it up much.

I liked how the new sewing machine has guidelines on both sides of the sewing plate. As a sewer, this was highly beneficial. Whether I was sewing a seam on the right or left, it didn’t matter. I had sewing guides to keep me in check for my seam allowances.

This sewing machine comes with 23 built-in stitches. 6 Basic Stitches, 4 Stretch Stitches, 12 Decorative Stitches, and 1 Buttonhole stitch.

It also has 4 gauges of stitch length. At first glance, I wasn’t impressed. With my old sewing machine, I had 6 types of stitch lengths to chose from.

However, when I played with the sewing machine, it has 4 gauges listed but it has more gauges within those gauges.

For instance, you can set your stitch length at 2.1, 2.5, 2.8 and so on. I like this feature because it allows me to change my gauge by decimal increments. Not only that, the dials make a clicking noise so you know if you are switching your stitch length or not.

As a result, this allows me to control how long I want my stitches to be. Not only that, I can control the tension, stitch width, and fabrication better. It also allows me to create seams in my garments effortlessly.

bobbins for sewing machine

The sewing machine came along with 3 bobbins. Like any other sewing machine, it was easy to whine a bobbin, install it, and start sewing. This machine has a top drop-in bobbin. I like and prefer the top drop-in bobbins because I can see what I was doing while installing the bobbin.

However, I did run into an issue within the first week of using this sewing machine. My threads kept snagging or bunching up within my bobbin case. No matter what I did, the sewing machine kept eating my threads by the yards.

Due to the excess threads ending up in the bobbin case, I figured my bobbin tension was loose. I also came to this conclusion from my past experience of sewing as well.  To fix this, I had to take my whole bobbin case apart.

Not gonna lie, I was anxious when doing this because my machine was still fresh and brand new. How could it have tension problems already? Whatever the case, it couldn’t hurt to adjust the bobbin tension. After reading the manual and looking up some youtube videos I was able to fix my bobbin issue.

That did the trick! After fixing my bobbin tension, I was able to get back to my projects and keep going.

Foot Pedal

Like any regular sewing machine, this machine comes with a standard foot pedal. However, it’s significantly smaller than the other foot pedals that came with my other machines.

Having a smaller foot pedal doesn’t mean anything. It still functions the same except that it’s smaller in size. This was probably done so you can store it away with ease.

The only call out that I have is that the foot pedal moves around on solid floorings. But this doesn’t only happen with this sewing machine. It happens with my other sewing machines as well. Although it’s not a huge deal, it is annoying when you have to get up and quickly search for the foot pedal under your table.

However, this is something that is easily fixed. One of the sewing hacks I have to solve this issue is afoot pedal mat or a surface grip pads. These little tools have helped my pedal stay in place so I don’t have to go searching for it anymore.

Presser Feets

As I stated previously, this sewing machine came with 4 different presser feet. I’ve used 2 of the four feet. I mostly use the all-purpose foot and zipper foot. The feet fulfill their purpose in helping me sew regular stitches and attaching zippers. As such, I don’t have many complaints.

The feet are also all made in metal. This is great because the feet will last a long time. An area of improvement that I see is that some of the feet can be transparent or see-through. However, that isn’t a hard fix. I can always get more pressure feet in an accessories kit.

features of a sewing machine

LED Light

This machine does come with a built-in LED light. I found this rather helpful because not only is the light brighter, but it’s energy-efficient. Also, I can save a little on my electric bills when I sew for long hours.

Another plus of having an LED light, is that my eyes don’t hurt after sewing for periods of time. With incandescent lights, I found myself having to take breaks in between sewing due to headaches.

Not only that, LED lights run much cooler. If you sew for a long period of time, you know that the incandescent light bulbs can generate a lot of heat. I learned a quick and hard lesson from this. As I was switching presser feet, my hand lightly touched the bulb and I was burned. That’s why I appreciate the LED light way more. I don’t accidentally get burn anymore.

Like many home sewing machines, this machine is portable. Being compact and portable allows me to carry this sewing machine to places in case I need to do some extra sewing. For instance, if something falls apart at fashion shows or dance competitions, I can quickly get it fixed because the machine is portable.

quality sewing machine

Being a heavy-duty sewing machine, this machine does have some weight to it. It’s about 14.5 pounds with a metal frame inside to hold all the components in place. The outside of the sewing machine is made of some heavy-duty plastic that doesn’t seem to break if you were to accidentally drop it.

However, I do recommend buying a hard case for your sewing machine. It keeps it in tip-top shape. In my past experiences, the hard cases have saved my machines from damages when it’s been accidentally dropped or have things fall on it.

Other Thoughts

While this Singer Heavy Duty 4423 is called heavy duty, you have to understand that it is not an industrial machine. Nevertheless, this sewing machine is still amazing. It will help you accomplish your sewing projects just like a Juki industrial machine.

One of the biggest disappointments people have with this machine is that it doesn’t work the way they want it to. Does this mean it is not working properly? No. Knowing and understanding the limits of your machine is the key to your success as a fashion designer

This machine is able to sew denim, leather, canvas, and other thick/tough fabrication. You need to know how many layers of each material it can sew through. It will sew through a few layers of these thick fabrication. But, if you plan for it to sew through 8 or more layers of these thick fabrications it will struggle.

Not only that, there are other various factors you have to think about. Such as the types of sewing needles you will need with your projects. If you are sewing through thick layers of denim, a needle made for lightweight fabrics will not hold up. It would break as you sew. This will cause tension within your sewing machine to mess up, which can lead to other issues.
